Springfield couple competes after catching man recording in house

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A couple in Springfield are on fire after noticing a man was using his phone to record audio in their home.

Police say they don’t believe this is a tom-peeping situation, but it can still be dangerous.

The couple spoke privately to Western Mass News, but wished to remain anonymous and turn off the cameras for their safety. They told us they were worried the person might come back and possibly do something worse.

It all started when a couple was alarmed by a dog barking at the door late one night.

“We were in the room and the dog started barking,” the wife told us. “When my husband checked the camera, he realized that someone was recording the window.”

The couple provided us with video from their security camera. You can clearly see a man holding what looks like a phone, pointing it at their bedroom window.

They said they called the police immediately and told them what they saw.

“They couldn’t do anything if they didn’t see him here when they arrived,” the wife said.

The Springfield Police Department told Western Mass News that while the situation was frightening, they did not believe it was a peeking situation.

Springfield Police spokesman Ryan Walsh said: “It’s obviously very disturbing when someone enters your property late at night. “Our officers who have been looking into this matter initially believe that what is most concerning is the possibility that someone is trying to break into their home.”

Police said there had been reports of some suspicious activity in the area prior to the situation, but they have stationed officers in the area since.

“We haven’t seen any similar activity in the past week or so, so hopefully the issue has been resolved,” Walsh told us.

However, the Springfields are still very concerned, especially when they have four children at home and they don’t want to confront this stranger.

“We didn’t dare confront this person because we didn’t know if they were armed or if they were dangerous,” the wife said.

“That was my fear,” her husband added. “I went to check and I got shot, and the police came and I died.”

Police say that if you see anything suspicious in your neighborhood, report it immediately.
