COLOMBO: Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday held a cabinet meeting with all ministers at the Prime Minister’s office, shortly after Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa officially informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he was resigning.
“Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe held a discussion with cabinet ministers this morning (11am) at the Prime Minister’s Office,” the Prime Minister’s media unit said in a statement.
“All the ministers participating in the meeting were of the opinion that as soon as there is an agreement to form a full-party Government, they are ready to hand over their responsibilities to that Government.”
President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa officially informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he was resigning, as pressure from protesters mounted.
Rajapaksa announced that he would resign as previously announced, the Prime Minister’s media unit said, according to the Colombo Gazette.
Earlier, on Saturday, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced in a press conference that the President will resign on July 13.
Rajapaksa’s resignation was introduced after thousands of people stormed the Presidential Palace House in Fort on Saturday. The dramatic images come from the PM’s official residence, where they are seen playing board games, sleeping on sofas, enjoying themselves in the park grounds and preparing food for dinner.
Even Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced his resignation amid the ongoing protests. However, protesters have occupied the President’s house and the Prime Minister has stated that they will continue to occupy their homes until they resign.
The worsening economic situation in the country has led to increased tensions and over the past few weeks there have been reports of a number of confrontations between individuals and members of the police and armed forces in the country. fuel stations, where thousands of desperate members of the public lined up for hours and sometimes days.
Sri Lanka is experiencing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, followed by successive waves of Covid-19 that threaten to delay development for many years.
Oil supply shortages have forced schools and government offices to close until further notice. The economic crisis will push families into hunger and poverty – some for the first time – adding half a million people World Bank estimated to have fallen below the poverty line because of the pandemic.
