Suspected suicide blast at Indonesian police station, cop killed

BANDUNG: Two people were killed and eight injured in the Indonesian city of Bandung on Wednesday when a suspected Islamist militant, who may have been angered by the country’s new penal code, blew himself up himself at a police station, authorities said.
Ahmad RamadhanThe head of the National Police’s mass media office, said authorities were coordinating with the counter-terrorism unit to investigate the incident that left a suspect in the attack and a police officer dead.
Jamaah inspired by the Islamic State Ansharut Daulah (JAD) may be behind the attack, Ibnu Suhendra of Indonesia’s counter-terrorism agency (BNPT) told Metro TV. He said JAD had carried out similar attacks in Indonesia.
West Java Sheriff Suntana told Metro TV that authorities were investigating a blue motorcycle found at the scene that they believe was used by the attacker. Attached to the bicycle was a piece of paper bearing a message rejecting Indonesia’s new penal code, which parliament approved on Tuesday.
“There’s a note on the motorcycle that says the penal code is a pagan product, kill the law enforcement,” Suntana said.
Some religious extremists reject state laws, say Islam, as the only legal authority, analysts say.
Suntana said the attacker brought two bombs to the scene, but only had time to detonate one.
Footage from the scene above Wednesday showed the police station damaged, with some debris from the building on the ground and smoke billowing from the area.
