The Princess director’s previous revenge story is a horror movie worth watching
Hulu’s New Subversive Princess Movie, CHEAP Rated Action Movie Princess, dropped on Hulu last Friday. Quickly (and accurately) described as “Rapunzel meets Raid“It was a very different, physically demanding role for star Joey King, who told Polygon she did about ’85 to 90%’ of what you see in the movie.
Princess directed by Le Van Kiet and co-stars Veronica Ngo, who plays a mentor to Joey’s princess character, training her in the art of fencing. But back in 2019, Kiet and Ngo teamed up to be one of the best Martial Arts Movies in recent memory: the hit Vietnamese revenge thriller Furie. If you haven’t watched it, there’s no better time than now.
Furie is a clever reversal of the dangerous man’s “dangerous kidnap and resort to old ways” revenge story. But instead it was a dad who was in some special forces unit (think of it all-Pick Liam Neeson’s Projects), Furie is about a mother (Ngo), named Hai Phuong, who is a former gangster. Now living a quiet life in a small countryside, Hai Phuong must use her old skills and connections to rescue her daughter after she is unexpectedly kidnapped.
Furie It’s completely filled with great fight scenes, like the opening scene above in an open-air food market. Kiet makes good use of the settings to amplify the choreography, and the film begins to take on color in both the interior and exterior settings (there’s another thrilling fight scene later in the series). house full of neon lights).
But as capable and engaging as Kiet’s direction is, it’s Ngo who steals the show and makes that movie. A brilliant screenwriter who can convey her despair, rage, and skill both through combat and in quieter scenes, which is the kind of role that makes her star before an action career. Castle. And as Kiet will tell you, Ngo really comes from that fighting skill.
“You don’t want to get into a bar brawl with Veronica,” he told Polygon. “I saw her in action. [She’ll be] in the middle of the road, where her knuckles were broken and like No, it’s nothing. “
Furie a resounding success in Vietnam, breaking the record for the highest-grossing Vietnamese film ever. When the film dropped on Netflix a few months after its domestic release, that audience exploded into a vibrant international action fanbase, Kiet told Polygon.
“It just speaks to the power of streaming these days,” he said. “People are willing to watch something with subtitles and it still resonates with them.”
If you haven’t seen it yet Furie no, what are you waiting for?
