While the feature currently only allows players to choose a binary gender due to technical limitations, the team has indicated that they will eventually “extend this feature to include additional gender identifiers.” which we don’t have at the moment.”
In the FAQ section of the announcement post, Maxis defended the choice to implement the feature and explained that, while these options can be ignored and Sims will function as always, the the menu body is not switchable. “While we strive to give players the option to toggle certain game features, the LGBTQIA+ identity is a fact of life, not on and off.”

This isn’t the only feature Maxis has added to The Sims 4 to better represent the experience of LGBTQIA+ players. In May, the team added customizable pronouns to the game. And earlier this year, the group undo the cancellation of the Russian release of my Wedding Story pack, is was initially shelved due to strange stories that clashed with Russia’s anti-gay laws.
