Thousands of British postal workers walk out over pay

LONDON: Over 115,000 workers in England‘S Royal letter began its first strike action in four days on Friday in a pay dispute that the postal group says could cause significant disruption to customers.
It is the latest labor outage to hit the UK as workers demand higher wages amid a cost-of-living crisis, with energy bills soaring and inflation expected to exceed 13% by the end of the year.
“We will fight very hard here for a well-deserved raise for our members,” General Secretary of the Communications Union Dave Ward told Sky News.
Royal Mail said it had offered a 5.5% pay rise for CWU level workers, the biggest increase in years.
The union, which says the strike is the biggest industrial action workers have taken this summer in the UK, disputes this and says the company has imposed a 2% pay rise on workers and proposed 1.5% increase subject to changes in terms and conditions.
Britain’s centuries-old postal and postal service apologized to customers for the disruption and said it had contingency plans in place, but could not completely replace employees’ daily duties. frontline member.
Royal Mail earlier this month warned it could suffer a loss for its UK business in the 2022-23 financial year if the strike goes ahead. Further hikes are scheduled for August 31, September 8, and September 9.
Royal Mail CEO Simon Thompson said businesses need to change the way they work to reflect the fact that they now deliver more parcels than mail and the parcel delivery market is very competitive.
“Royal Mail is a company that society wants to survive … but we needed this change so we could turn into a parcel business so we could grow,” Thompson told BBC Radio.
“We want to pay our team more. The more change, the more pay.”
