COUNTRY GUARANTEE (CBSDFW.COM) – Thousands of people waited in line to receive free school supplies and other essentials at Tarrant County Roundup.
Along with backpacks, pencils and pens, kids also get free haircuts and care for all their medical needs, including photography, physicals, and dental and vision exams. This gift is a relief to many.
“I think it’s been a great thing, it’s helped a lot,” Kimberly Harris said.
Only families in Tarrant County who meet specific income requirements are eligible.
Jessika Hunt said: “It feels really good because they give other people who might need things but don’t have the money to buy them.
Fort Worth Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner says the back-to-school event helps students achieve success by removing that financial burden.
“Four out of five of our students are economically disadvantaged so events like these are important to our parents and students,” Scribner said. “[Due to] most recent economic challenges, it’s our opportunity to help our students get to school on their first day of academic readiness. ”
The first day of school for most students in the district is August 15.
