As the country faces an energy crisis that will affect the lives of millions, it is important to note that more than £20 billion in tax profits went unclaimed last year. Tax returns can be confusing for many people and seem daunting. It can be a complicated process, leaving many people unable to even consider it.

Little is known about the annual refunds workers can claim, especially in PAYE and blue-collar industries. Are you eligible to receive a tax return without knowing it? Here’s how to get what’s right for you.

Claim your food expenses

There are many reasons you might be able to claim a full refund of your food costs. If you work more than an hour and a half a day, leave home before 6 a.m. or work after 8 p.m., you may be eligible to file a tax return. In fact, you can claim up to £0.7.50 per day! If you are traveling to multiple locations for business purposes or staying overnight, you can also claim a tax refund on food expenses.

You can claim up to £16 a week in laundry if you wear your uniform to work. Refunds also apply to the repair and replacement of your uniform. However, you cannot claim the cost of the original workwear purchase.

Request travel expenses

If traveling is a common aspect of your job, you can claim a tax refund for your travel expenses. If you have traveled to two different locations, you may be eligible. This relief also applies to those for whom the employer is not self-supporting. For example, if you drive a company car or use a company fuel card, you may not be eligible to file a tax return. However, if you use public transport or are supported with parking or congestion charges, you may be able to claim some of your money back.

Claim training expenses

If your employer does not cover the cost of training but training is required for you to perform your role effectively, you may be able to claim a refund on this. For example, a course in health and safety or food hygiene may be required in your job.

Cost of meals at the hotel

Hotel stays or alternative accommodation may sometimes be required as part of your job. If you’ve been staying in a hotel due to attending a conference, part of work or a training course, you can claim a tax break on these expenses. Likewise, if you are staying at a boarding house due to temporary employment somewhere, you can claim the money back for this.

Re-claim the electronic device

Electronics are part of everyday work life for many of us. If this applies to you, you can claim a tax refund on items like laptops, printers, and even stationery. If there is any other equipment that you use for your line of work that is not for personal use, you can also request this.

Re-request for cell phone use

If you use your cell phone or personal device to call, text, or check work email, you can claim a refund for this. If you are a business owner or you are a freelance business owner, you can cover the full cost of your cell phone bill. However, this is only the case if your cell phone contract is held in the name of the company and payments are made directly from the business bank account.

Request to return to work from home

If you live too far from the office and have to work from home, or your employer doesn’t have an office, you can request a tax return. Similarly, if you are self-employed and work from home, you can get a tax break. You can claim refunds for gas, electricity, and even broadband costs. However, this only happens if they are used for your work.

Request a refund of payroll administration fee

Business owners and self-employed people can claim a tax break on payroll administration fees.

Request to return to membership

Some work areas require membership to professional bodies or trade unions. If it is expected that you will fulfill your obligations, you can claim a refund for this. Annual subscriptions to approved professional organizations or associations may also be required again.
