Xander Schauffele tags rounds 63, 63, 67 and 68 to win the title
Xander Schauffele won the 2022 Travelers championship with two shots against JT Poston and Sahith Theegala at TPC River Highlands.
The win marks Schauffele’s sixth PGA Tour career win and the first time he has successfully converted a 54-hole lead. He held the one-shot advantage to go into the final round on Sunday after rounds of 63, 63 and 67.
“It was unbelievable,” Schauffele said.
“I was watching a birdie just to get into the play-offs and then saw Sahith having a bit of a glitch here as I was standing on the tee. Then I knew I had to hit that fairway, next anywhere. on the green to make that face value.”
The hiccup that Schauffele was talking about was Theegala’s last hole. The 24-year-old American took the lead after 16 holes and then a birdie on day 17 helped him beat Schauffele.
But Theegala will have a nightmare on the 18th. He got himself deep into a bunker off the tee and couldn’t get out of it on the first try. His trick putt then bounced off and he scored a trick double that gave Schauffele the lead.
Schauffele himself wouldn’t have been as dramatic, as his final tee shot landed on the fairway and he was able to score a birdie to seal the victory.
Rory McIlroy finished his tournament nine under par, drawing in 19th. He scored a final round of 67, including five birdies and two bogeys, but at the cost of the risks entering Friday and Saturday.
Martin Laird of Scotland finished his part under 10.
