For Smith, it was an opportunity to learn with a young team with great potential in Southeast Texas.

“I’m delighted,” Smith said. “We have a number of young lads coming back who will be playing. With us on the defensive, I just need to exaggerate to come back with some young lads.”

During the summer, Smith saw a massive hiring increase by picking offers from Texas, TCU, LSU, Boston College and Auburn because he sees circling the camp as a great proof-of-concept opportunity for him.

“I especially go camping,” he says of what has helped him progress. “I’m working in my craft and they’ve taught me some exercises on coverage and everything else. I feel those camps really helped me out a lot. What I focused on the most was crime. en pass. At 4A we don’t do too many passes, so I go to the camps and try to do it. That’s my main thing.”

Among his initial offers, Baylor and Texas Technology are the programs that built the strongest relationship with Smith early on.

At Baylor, quality control analyst Alex Osborne was a key part of the Bears’ early standing with Smith.

“I like the way they approach me and my family, they are really sincere,” he said. “Before they offered, it was a real process. That’s what matters. I’ve been there four times and they make me feel like family every time I come in. Me and Coach Osborne, we were blown away. lock tightly. “

Between James BlanchardPursuing talent in Southeast Texas and the feeling Smith gets from Joey McGuireTexas Tech made a big impact early on with the athletic defender.

“That’s real loyalty at Tech,” he said. “They’re looking at some real fissures in our area and put our zip code on the map here in 409. That’s really cool. I like the head coach there, too, Coach McGuire. I like his style and everything.”

“TCU really stands out to me, it’s been my dream school since I was growing up,” he said. “They were really honest with me.”

In Texas, Smith is encouraged by what the Longhorns are rallying for in 2023.

“I really like Texas and their recruiting class, what they’ve been doing,” he said. “I feel like Coach Sark is on the upswing and I can see myself being part of the defense helping them win a few games.”

“It’s the team, everyone here loves LSU,” he said. “It’s the SEC. They’ve got a really good backer, Damone Clark, which I grew up watching as a kid. I feel like I fit his playstyle a bit, so that’s why I like LSU. “

For fields not yet provided, Alabama and Ole Miss are two programs that Smith is interested in.

“Alabama, I talked to Nick Saban and he said he was very interested. Plus, it’s Alabama. Ole Miss is also a very good school. “

Amid all the recruiting attention coming this fall, Smith is also working to complete a pair of goals on the field.

“On target, I want 120 tackles,” he said. “I feel like last year with 99 tackles was not enough. I also want to have more say in defense. Last year, I was still young, so this year I want to become more famous.”
