UK foreign minister Liz Truss announces bid to succeed Boris Johnson as PM


LONDON: UK Foreign Secretary, Lizz Truss on Sunday made a bid to succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the conservative party and prime minister, a local media report said.
Truss, 46, is widely considered one of the potential candidates for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
Notably, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss cut short his trip to the G20 meeting in Indonesia to return to London. Moreover, the number of candidates increased to 11 soon after she announced as MP Rehman Chishti to follow up with her own candidacy.
Johnson resigned on Thursday following a dramatic cabinet revolt over his scandalous leadership, but he will stay on as caretaker prime minister until there is a Leader Tory I have chosen.
Nearly 30 UK government officials, including key figures like UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid and the Premier of the Exchequer Rishi Sunaksubmitted his resignation because of the recent scandal involving former deputy sheriff Christopher Pincher.
A total of 58 ministers have left the government after an ethics scandal led to the resignation of the British Prime Minister. Johnson agreed to resign after one of his close allies, Treasury Prime Minister Nadhim Zahawi, told the prime minister to resign for the good of the country.
“Prime Minister: this is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly for all of the country,” Zahawi said in a letter to Johnson. “You have to do the right thing and go now.”
Johnson, 58, has managed to stay in power for nearly three years, despite accusations that he was too close to party donors, that he defended supporters from accusations of bullying and corruption, while deceiving Congress and being dishonest with the public about parties in government office broke the rules of containing the pandemic.
However, Johnson could stay on until October when the Conservatives meet at their annual conference to find a replacement. Usually, when a Conservative leader resigns, they give the party time to hold an all-out leadership contest.
Former Minister and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also announced his bid to become Britain’s next Prime Minister on Friday.
