Using technology as a safety tool on Halloween

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – The trick or cure can be fun for the whole family. It can be just as busy as other families sitting on the sidewalk and picking up candy for themselves, but using the devices you already have can make the evenings less stressful for parents and kids.

Betsy Francis, AT&T General Manager for Mid-Atlantic Countries, encourages families to distribute devices such as Airtags or other tracking devices, smartwatches, and phones among family members. before committing the act of deception. Then, using the “Find My” feature on your Apple or Android device, you can track your kids in case they get back.

She mentioned the geofencing feature that notifies you if a device leaves a specified area.

Ensuring that everyone involved knows how to use the devices properly is very important.

“If you are giving them a device [make sure they know] how to contact emergency services, how to contact their parents, make sure they know where those quick turns are… [and] make sure they clearly know where those contacts exist and how to access them,” she said.

She adds that even saving a neighbor’s phone number as an emergency contact can be helpful.

It’s also important that every device is fully charged before hitting the sidewalk on Halloween night.
