Victoria Spartaz opposes McCarthy’s attempt to remove Democrats from committees

Republican Representative Victoria Sparta of Indiana announced Tuesday that she opposes House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. push to remove three Democrats – Representatives Adam Schiff, Eric Swalwell and Ilhan Omar – from the committees.

The new House GOP majority is preparing for a confrontation with Democrats on the issue, but resistance from within the House GOP is likely to complicate the effort to topple Omar, especially a Democrat in Minnesota. Spartaz is the second Republican to suggest voting against such a move. House of Representatives Nancy Mace of South Carolina signaled to CNN earlier this month that she would be unlikely to support the measure to oust Omar if it went to the floor.

McCarthy cited a “new standard” from Democrats as to why he stripped them of their committee duties after the Democratic-led House of Representatives. 2021 removed GOP Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona from their committee on inflammatory posts and rhetoric.

In his statement, Spartan referred to an earlier move by House Democrats, saying that “two wrongs do not make one right.”

Speaker Pelosi has taken unprecedented action in previous Congress to remove Representatives Greene and Gosar from their committees without due process. Speaker McCarthy is taking unprecedented action in this Congress to reject some of the committee’s mandates for Minorities without due process again,” Spartaz continued.

“As I said against it in the House of Commons two years ago, I will not support this charade again,” the congresswoman said.

Democratic leaders have formally relinquished Schiff and Swalwell to the House Intelligence Committee. And Omar has formally requested a seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

McCarthy has the power to unilaterally block Schiff and Swalwell from serving on the House Intelligence Committee because it is a select committee. In a letter to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday night, McCarthy formally declined the California Democratic Party seats on the council.

However, ousting Omar from The House Foreign Affairs Committee will request a vote by the full House. Democrats will oppose and it will only take a handful of Republicans to prevent McCarthy from moving forward as Republicans only control a razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives.

Omar told reporters that Pelosi was “very clear” about why Greene and Gosar were removed.

“It was because they threatened the lives of their colleagues,” she told reporters. “They endanger the people they will serve on the committees, the actual organization they are sworn to protect. Unless McCarthy can tell how myself, Adam Schiff, and Eric Swalwell are a danger to the organization and our colleagues, he will not follow the example Speaker Pelosi has set. go out.”

Spartaz voted “present” transparent few voting round when McCarthy was trying to garner support for the right to speak at the start of a new Congress. However, in the end, the congresswoman Vote for McCarthy in the final round in which he secured the hammer.
