When it comes to picking the 32 best sports games of all time, there’s a treasure trove of titles to choose from and the debate can get heated very quickly. So we turned to a team of IGN staff including our publisher, Head of Features and Head of Social Media (to name a few), to select and seed the competitive games for GOAT status.
We took into account the key consensus, IGN staff favorites, and overall popularity of the game or franchise, dividing them into four talent-rich groups: Traditional Sports, Power Sports Death, Racing/Fighting, and Wildcards.
To keep it balanced and varied, the franchise can only have one representative—so each pick serves as the face of that series. So, if the 2005 Baseball MVP makes the list, it will represent the entire Triple Play/MVP series. In the end, no mobile sports games are included in the framework.
