It’s the face you didn’t know you needed!
For those who haven’t read it yet Selma Blair‘s book Mean Baby: A Memoir of Growing Upthere is a strange story that links her to Drew Barrymore – someone who then eagerly gets to the bottom of their first conversation on her daytime talk show.
In the interview, released on Wednesday, Selma explained that as she wrote in her book, she had a very toxic relationship with her father. Elliot Beitner – and it strangely ends with regards to Never been kissed star. She started:
“My father and I went out to have some friendship, we never actually shot. Because he did the unthinkable to me, I will never call him dad again, really.”
This goes all the way back to the time when Selma started the business, after she got her first job in a movie. Problem? The film’s producers began receiving push letters falsely alleging that the aspiring actress “was a heroin addict.” It completely destroyed her budding career, as she explains:
“It was a real poison pen that wrote about me, claiming to be an agent. They fired me before they opened fire. They were lovely to me but explained, ‘We don’t know what’s going on, liability.’ ‘We don’t believe this, but…’ ”
But suddenly she’s in more trouble than she’s worth. Pfft. The joke is theirs, they passed up the chance to have Selma Blair in their movie!

Selma, then still a teenager, thought the letter writer was just a bully in high school, just a mean girl who had gone too far. But it doesn’t end there. Soon, more letters were sent out – this time to Drew! The Evil intentions alum recalls being approached by the police because of death threats being sent to the child star:
“I heard from a detective who said, ‘We know this isn’t you’ – which could happen almost a year later – ‘but someone wrote Drew Barrymore, letters in poisoned pen, there was Selma Blair’s signature.'”
She was shocked – but not as much as when she found out the source of the letters:
“Finally, I, for a short story, learned it was my father, someone related to my father and he let this information get to her.”
Selma reveals in her book it was her father’s girlfriend at the time. She explained to Drew:
“When he found out it was her, he chose her and didn’t believe me. He said, ‘No, she’s not doing this, you’re ruining her life too, you put mickeys in her drinks at Starbucks.’ I mean, just ridiculous stuff. I was like, “I’m in New York, I’ve never met her.”
Oof. Looks like this woman has some serious problems! She is provoking a man to drive into his relationship with his teenage daughter! And the sad thing is, it worked…
Selma told Drew that she and her father “never put on real makeup” about it:
“My whole adult life after that, once I knew it was him, I had to cut him off.”
It was only “finally” that her father – who passed away in 2012 – finally admitted that he knew the truth. They lost that relationship for so long…
So what side does Drew take in this total death-threat collapse? It’s much easier for her – she doesn’t get the letters! She was so protected, once a child star, that she wasn’t even told about these death threats – which was clearly a huge weight on Selma’s shoulders, who said even though she knows she doesn’t, this has always happened. was her fear, what Drew must have thought of her.
Drew says she only learned about the letters when the book came out – and pursued Selma for an interview simply because she loves her documentary and has been a “fan” as well. “admired for many years” of her fellow actresses! Huh!
And the fandom belongs to each other! Selma surprised Drew by exclaiming:
“You were my childhood favorite, because you were the Daughter. I suppose that’s why the letters are in your hands, because he knows how much you mean to me. It is not random. You are the favorite. “
It’s funny how Drew is surprised by that! She must know that she is a favorite star of MANY people! So glad they got this moment to heal – and apparently became BFFs!
