Why NVIDIA’s old RTX GPUs won’t get the new DLSS 3.0 feature

GPU is an important part of any PC and choosing the right one can be a difficult decision. If you’re looking at NVIDIA GPUs, you might be wondering if DLSS 3.0 is an available feature. DLSS 3.0 is the latest version of the technology and it’s only available on RTX 4000 series GPUs. So if you have an older NVIDIA GPU, luck isn’t really on your side.

DLSS is a technology that uses Tensor Cores are found in NVIDIA GPUs to improve game performance while maintaining image quality. It is a WHOtechnology based on in-game visual enhancement, allowing games to run at higher resolutions and frame rates.

NVIDIA’s Ada GPU will offer significant improvements over the company’s previous generation of GPUs, including a new architecture and support for NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling 3.0 technology. However, NVIDIA has no plans to provide support for the next generation RTX GPUs.

What is DLSS 3?

A breakthrough advancement in AI-powered graphics, DLSS 3 dramatically increases gameplay fluidity while maintaining superb visual quality and responsiveness. Building on the Super Resolution platform, DLSS combines NVIDIA Reflex low latency technology for the best responsiveness and Optical Multi-Frame Generation to create completely new frames. The fourth-generation NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture, which also powers GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards, is a powerhouse for supersampling.

Frame Generation Autoencoder uses two consecutive in-game frames and Ada’s Optical Flow Accelerator. The optical flow field records the direction and speed of the pixels moving between frames 1 and 2. Particles, reflections, shadows, lighting, and other pixel-level details are not taken into account by motion vector calculations in The game engine can be seen by the Optical Stream Accelerator. The optical flow field is calculated using two consecutive frames. Current and previous game frames and engine data such as motion vectors and depth are the four inputs.

The Frame Generation AI DLSS network chooses to use data from sequential game frames, optical stream fields, and game engine data such as motion vectors to create an intermediate frame for each pixel. DLSS 3 also uses the game engine’s motion vector to accurately track the movement of geometry in the scene, as opposed to the Optical Flow Accelerator, which captures pixel-level effects such as reflections. Framing can accurately reconstruct geometry and effects using both engine motion vectors and optical flows for motion tracking.

Why is DLSS 3 not supported in previous generation RTX GPUs?

Because DLSS Frame Generation runs as a post-processing on the GPU, DLSS3 does not work on previous generation cards. The upgraded optical flow analyzers on the RTX 4000 series cards are several light years ahead of previous generation models. Although older generation cards support OFA, they are not as fast or efficient as Ada.

While previous-generation RTX cards were able to support DLSS 3, NVIDIA chose to discontinue support for them because they believed that the DLSS they could achieve would be slow and of lower overall quality than what could be achieved. be on the RTX4000. This decision may have contributed to the general lack of interest in DLSS.
